Things You'll Need:
- About 150 yards Shetland wool Straight knitting needles, size 7 Knitting markers Yarn or darning needle Scissors

Step 1
Purchase your yarn.
Though many craft supply stores like Michael's (see link in Resources) sell Shetland wool, you may need to order online (see link in Resources) to get the specific color you want. -
Step 2
Choose your needles.
For this hat, a size 7 straight needle is suggested. -
Step 3
Create a yarn ball from your skein of yarn.

Step 4
Make a slip knot in one end of the yarn. Knit a small swatch to check your gauge. It should be about 4 stitches per 1 inch.
Cast on 88 stitches. -
Step 5
Interchange knit and purl stitches for 1 1/2 inches.

Step 6
Work stockinette stitches for 5 inches, ending in a purl row.

Step 7
Knit 11 stitches.
Place a plastic marker on the needle.
Knit 11 more stitches, and place a plastic marker.
Keep knitting and placing markers every 11 stitches for one whole row.
Purl 1 row. -
Step 8
Start to decrease.
Knit 2 stitches, then K2tog (knit two stitches together).
Repeat for one whole row.
Purl 1 row. -
Step 9
Repeat Step 8 six times, until you are left with 32 stitches.

Step 10
K2tog every stitch for one whole row. You should only have a handful of stitches when this is done.

Step 11
Cut the yarn, leaving a 10 to 12 inch tail. With a darning or yarn needle, thread the tail through the stitches and draw together. With the yarn needle, seam the hat together with a mattress stitch. Make a double knot on the remaining tail and cut the tail off. You're done. You've got a great new Shetland wool hat.
