How to Troubleshoot Computer Speakers

Speakers are one of the simplest components of a computer system, but there are times when speakers just don't seem to work right, and with surround sound and other sound effects, they are getting more and more complex. If you are having trouble with your speakers, there are a few steps you can take to try to restore sound to your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Play a song or audio file. If possible, set it to automatically repeat.

    • 2

Check the volume and mute controls on the operating system.

    • 3

Check the speaker switch. Most external speakers come with a volume control and an on/off switch, often with an indicator light. Make sure the speakers are turned on and that the volume on the speakers is not turned down all the way.

    • 4

Check the speaker power. Many external speakers need to be powered by an AC outlet. If you have a subwoofer, the power cord will be there. Check that the power cord is plugged in and that the outlet where it is plugged in is working. If it is plugged in to a power strip, be sure the power strip is turned on; if the power strip has a fuse, check that the fuse is still working.

    • 5

Check the output wire, which should be plugged into the back of your computer, usually into a green jack. The other end of the wire needs to run to your speakers, or your subwoofer if you have one. Be sure it is plugged into the correct jack, usually labeled "Line in," and make sure it is plugged into the digital audio jack if the output is digital audio.

If none of the above steps work, check your audio drivers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try not to use speakers not designed for your computer.
