Creating your own pieces of jewelry is always fun, and making your own colored nylon rope necklace is definitely at the top of the list when it comes to fun jewelry craft projects. The colored nylon rope necklace is a functional piece that can be dressed up or dressed down. The necklace can be made to suit practically anyone from glam girls to surfer dudes--and everyone in between. Keep it simple or rock it with decorative details; the possibilities are endless.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Colored nylon cord Scissors Tape Decorative beads (up to 20) Flat surface, such as a table
  1. Step 1

Cut three pieces of nylon cord with each piece measuring approximately 20 inches in length. You can use the same colored cord for all three pieces, or you can mix it up with different colors to add a little extra flair.

  2. Step 2

Align the pieces evenly together, and while holding the pieces firmly in your hand--tie the pieces together in a secure knot about 1 inch down from the ends on one side. Leave the other side untied.

  3. Step 3

Place the pieces on a table, and use tape to secure the knot to the surface.

  4. Step 4

Braid the three nylon cord pieces together by placing the left piece over the middle piece, then the right piece over the middle piece; repeat. Continue to braid the pieces together in this fashion until you have a 1- to 2-inch braided section. Make sure your braiding is tight.

  5. Step 5

Secure the end of the braided section to the table using tape. This will assure that the braided section remains tight and intact.

  6. Step 6

Slip a decorative bead onto only one of the cords, sliding the bead all the way down until it rests firmly against the braided section.

  7. Step 7

Begin braiding the three nylon cord pieces together once again, repeating Step 5 and Step 6 until you have approximately 1 inch of loose cord remaining. At that time, tie the pieces together in a secure knot like you did in Step 2. Make sure that the knot is snug up against the last braided section.

  8. Step 8

Remove all of the tape that you have used to secure the necklace to the table during construction. You will now have a completed nylon rope necklace that will look like this: 1-inch loose pieces, secure knot, approximately 18 inches of braid/bead sections, secure knot and 1-inch loose pieces.

  9. Step 9

Wear your new nylon rope necklace by placing it around your neck and securing it by tying the 1-inch loose pieces on each end together.

Tips & Warnings
  • Decorative beads can be replaced with small charms if you desire. For a more simple look, limit the number of beads used or omit them all together. You can make the necklace longer or shorter; it all depends on personal preference.
