Your body fat percentage is simply the percentage of body weight that is accounted for by fat. Our bodies need fat to survive. Knowing your fat percentage will help set realistic goals for fat loss, not weight loss. Proper diet and exercise will help us lose excess fat, not weight.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap the tape measure around your abdomen. For men, the measurement tape should be level with your belly button. For women, the measurement should be taken at the thinnest part of your waist. Record the measurements on a piece of paper.

    • 2

Wrap the measurement tape snugly around the widest part of your hips. This measurement is for women only. Do not cheat by pulling the tape so tight that it compresses the skin and causes indentation. Record your measurement.

    • 3

Measure your neck. The tape measure should be snug and slope slightly downward towards the front. Record your measurement.

    • 4

Use the measurements you have taken plus your height to calculate your percentage on the calculator found in Resources below.
