    • 1

A game design or even a graphic design degree is the starting point of a career in game design. In recent years, more colleges have been offering gaming-specific degrees. Closer to graduation take on internships that deal with your desired field or one that will build leadership skills within the industry.

    • 2

Round out a game design degree with a business administration degree or minor. Business administration degrees or minors give you the skills you need to manage a team and will make you a better candidate than an individual who lacks such skills.

    • 3

Most directors are promoted from within the ranks. In fact, well over 50 percent of all executive directors have 10 or more years of game design experience. Once you receive your college degree, if you are interested in a director position you should become involved in the gaming industry as a designer or programmer.

Pay your dues. Starting off low in the ranks is not negotiable in the gaming industry. If you can get into the industry as a designer or a programmer, take the opportunity and put time into a single company. The longer you stay with one employer the more likely you will get promoted into the position you want.

Take any chance you get to become a leader and take on responsibilities that involve leading a team. You will eventually find your way into a team leader position and can continue to work your way up from there.

Thanks for the article. Please realize, anyone, that those private overpriced for-profit tech schools that offer a major in 'video game design' are NOT the best way to possibly get a job. Aiming at becoming a computer software engineer or computer programmer may help one to reach that goal albeit there is A LOT of competition out there.

I firmly believe that other ways are possible for those who may not start specifically with a degree in graphic design, video game development or programming to those with enough talent, dedication and passion e.g ambitious 3D modelers and computer literate concept artists i.e very creative and resourceful people used to thinking outside the box.
