Installing a stick of random access memory (RAM) gives your computer the extra room it needs to store data for running applications. Having the extra room to store temporary information keeps you computer from hanging up or slowing down while it waits for enough RAM to be freed up to process the next task.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver Anti static wrist strap (optional)
  1. Step 1

Shut down your computer and disconnect all cables running to the tower. Place the tower onto a stable work surface like a desk or a table.

  2. Step 2

Discharge any static from your clothing by rubbing you hands against any solid metal, grounded portion of the case or attach an antic static wrist strap between the case and your wrist.

  3. Step 3

Remove the screws to the side paneling to the computer case. The screw will be located at the back to the computer. Removing screws from the right, back side of the case should be enough to remove a side panel and give you access to the motherboard.

  4. Step 4

Slide the side panel off of the case's frame, then lay the case on its side with the open part facing up. If your case doesn't offer side panel access, remove all of the screws securing the case at the back and then completely remove the case.

  5. Step 5

Locate the RAM sockets on the motherboard. Find them by looking for the currently installed ram. Disengage the ejector locks securing the RAM to the board--the ram should pop up once both sides are released. Remove the any smaller capacity RAM if you don't have space for the new sticks.

  6. Step 6

Insert the new RAM sticks into the socket. Don't force them; they're made to go into the socket one way only. To tell if you're properly inserting the RAM, note the ejector locks--they should fall back into place as the RAM is inserted. Check that the sticks are securely seated in the socket, then latch on the ejector locks.

  7. Step 7

Replace the case, screws and cables. Your RAM will need no software installation; simply power your computer on.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult your manual for specific directions on removing the case. Check with your motherboard's manufacturer for a list of compatible RAM types or use an online tool such as that available at Crucial.com.
  • Do not force the RAM into the sockets--you risk damaging the sticks or the motherboard.
