How to Fill a Zippo Lighter

Refilling a cigarette lighter with lighter fluid is easy. Over filling the lighter is even easier.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a can of lighter fluid designed for a lighter. Pull the lighter out of the case and turn it upside down.

  2. Step 2

This is not the time to take out the screw, that you should now see. The screw is to be removed when you want to replace the flint. (You can use a flint from a disposable lighter for a replacement when you need one).

  3. Step 3

Open and turn upside down the can of lighter fluid with the nozzle touching the cotton or whatever the white stuffing is that absorbs the fluid. Squeeze the can and force some fluid from the can. When you see fluid saturating the cotton like interior of the lighter, stop.

  4. Step 4

With the lighter still upside down, insert it into the case. Now turn it right side up. Test the lighter; it should work now.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you spilled fluid on the flint, you may have to wait a few minutes before you fire it up.
  • If you over fill the lighter, that is, put all the fluid you can get into the lighter, you will probably have the entire lighter in flame when you first start it. No one is likely to get hurt if this happens, but accidentally dropping it while lit into a trash can full of paper might not be good.
  • Another punishment for over filling a lighter, especially in the hot months, if you carry the lighter in a pocket, is slightly burned skin similar to a mild sun burn.
