If you are not using an automatic espresso machine, that means a lot of variables you would have to do manually, and here we would touch on extracting espresso and the thing to take note of

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • espresso machine that is not automatic
  • water
  • electricity
  • ground coffee
  • good pair of eyes
  1. Step 1

    Making sure that your coffee grounds is good. This mean that you would done the right roasting, blending, grinding, dosing and tamping of the coffee, then the correct extraction would improves the taste of your espresso.

  2. Step 2

    When it comes to quality extraction, one of the key things that you would need to take note of is temperature stabilizing. before doing anything,allow about 2 ounces of water to flow through.

  3. Step 3

    Then, you do what is known as the pre-infusion cycle. This would distribute water over the top of the espresso pellet. Doing this would expand the pellet and seal it properly, this is to ensure that your blasting with the pressurized water would be smooth.

  4. Step 4

    Do note that if you are extracting about 1.5 ounces of espresso, the whole extraction would not take more than 30 seconds.

  5. Step 5

    If the extraction is longer than 30 seconds, this would mean that the grind size is too small and you would need to adjust the grinding to produce larger grind size.

  6. Step 6

    If it is lesser than 24 seconds, this would meant that your grind size is too big, you would need to have a smaller grind size.

  7. Step 7

    Having said all this, it is impossible to arrive exactly 30 seconds, give or take 2 seconds is fine.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is more applicable for semi-automatic espresso machine and commercial machine.
  • However, for those of you that want to buy some second hand products, these steps would be valuable to getting good espresso (second hand commercial machine are very cheap)
  • Be careful of the hot water
  • Be careful of the boiler and porta-filter, it is very hot
