Prepare for a Job Interview
Prepare for a Job Interview

Job interviews are stressful for most of us. Be totally prepared and fully confident for your next interview. Try these helpful tips covering the before and after of the interview process.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • appropriate attire
  • several resumes
  • letter of introduction (cover letter)
  • your own pens
  • letter of thanks
  1. Step 1

Check out the company you are interviewing with. Visit their location before hand to become familiar with directions, parking places and where to enter the building. Walk around the outside or park by the entrance if you can, to observe things like how people are dressed.

  2. Step 2

Surf the companies web site and obtain as much information as possible. Be as informed as you can. It will impress a potential employer if you know some details about the company product line or other pertinent details.

  3. Step 3

Based on your visit in step one, get your wardrobe together. Dark suit if it's a formal company. Conservative dress is best. You can loosen up later when you are hired. Just basic common sense here. Make sure shoes are polished, clothes are pressed. A trip to the haircutter is a great idea. You will look and feel great. Have a friend or family member check you out before you leave.

  4. Step 4

Write a cover letter for your resume. Just a brief introduction. There are free sites that show example cover letters you can use.

  5. Step 5

Prepare an interview kit containing all the essentials. This can be as simple as a neat folder or a small briefcase. Avoid a backpack or other large carry bag.

  6. Step 6

Make sure you know the names of the people who will be interviewing you and their job titles. If any of the names appear difficult to pronounce make a call and ask so you get it right. Also, if any of the people you are meeting have a name where they could be a man or woman, make sure you find out in advance.

  7. Step 7

Prepare a list of questions you may have while on the interview. For example, questions about benefits, starting date, hours, etc. Leave spaces on the page so you can write the answers down.

  8. Step 8

Bring at least three copies of your resume when you go on the interview. Keep one for yourself so you can copy information from it to the application. You may be interviewed by more than one person and can leave a copy with each person.

  9. Step 9

Posture and eye contact say a lot. Try to stay alert and look interested. Save money and benefits talk until the end. Shake hands firmly before and after. If you hands are sweaty, dry them off a bit first.

  10. Step 10

Even if you feel the things have gone badly, it is still a good practice to leave the interview in a professional and friendly manner. Ask for the individuals business or contact information. Write and send a follow up thank you letter to all interviewers. Good luck!
