How to Create Desktop Icons

Desktop Icons can be a great way to add quick access to your most used apps, folders, network locations, or web addresses. While this is a fairly simple skill and you can create a ton of them in a short time, you really should be careful not to overload you desktop with icons.

There is also three ways to accomplish this. First you can right click the desktop and cover new. Then click on shortcut. Second you could right click a file or locations, cover "send to", then click "Desktop (As a shortcut)". Or third you could find the file or folder then right click and drag it to your desktop. This will pop up a menu and let you choose "Create Shortcuts Here".

So here are the basic steps.

  • Computer
  • Mouse
  • Your Clicker Finger
  1. Step 1

    Find or locate something you want a desktop icon to. Here I chose "Program Files" folder on my computer.

  2. Step 2

    Right-Click and Drag that folder to desktop.

    Left-Click "Create Shortcuts here" in the pop up menu.

Tips & Warnings
  • Organize your desktop icons into folders to help sort or categorize them.
  • Name your shortcuts that mean something to you. Sometimes the default name may not be suitable.
  • Put your most used programs, files, folders, or web addresses right on your desktop for speedy access.
