Cleaning car carpets can be a daunting task, especially because it requires a lot of bending into difficult positions. But with the right tools, your car will be clean in no time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Garbage Bag
  • Vacuum (with hose and attachments)
  • Stain remover and old toothbrush
  • Carpet Shampooer (with hose and attachments)
  1. Step 1

First, pick up any trash from the floor of the car. It would be helpful to have a smaller garbage bag (like a grocery bag) to hold on your wrist while you throw everything away.

  2. Step 2

Remove the mats and shake them out outside of the car. Be sure to pick up anything that isn't biodegradable! Lay the mats on the ground and vacuum them, then leave them on the ground.

  3. Step 3

Vacuum the floor of the car with the vacuum hose, using attachments to make your work easier. Don't forget to move the seats back and forth to reach more carpet.

  4. Step 4

If there are any stains, treat them with stain remover. Let the spray sit for about 5 minutes, and scrub out with an old toothbrush.

  5. Step 5

A carpet shampooer will help you achieve the best results in cleaning your carpet. They can be rented (try rent.rugdoctor.com), but can also be a good investment if you plan to clean your carpets often.
Before actually shampooing your car, make sure it is going to be a warm, dry day and that you will not need your car for a few hours. Using the hose, shampoo and vacuum in straight strokes. Attachments will also be useful here for corners and small spaces.
When you're done, roll down your windows and leave the car outside to dry.

  6. Step 6

When everything is dry, replace your mats and roll up your windows. Enjoy your clean new carpets, and repeat often!

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to take a look at the things you throw away from your car- insurance cards and other important papers can easily get mixed up with the trash.
  • If you shampoo, be sure not to oversaturate the carpet, and give it enough time to dry. Otherwise, the wet carpet may start to mold.
