Things You'll Need:
- Certified Birth Certificate or US Passport
- Marriage license if applicable
- Proof of address such as utility bill
- Study for Written test
- Road Test
- Proof of Driver's Training if under 18

Step 1
Go to the DMVGo to your local DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles, Secretary of State Office, or whatever your local driver's license bureau is named and ask for a list of the identification required to obtain a driver's license as well as a copy of "What Every Driver Must Know."

Step 2
Study the Rules of the RoadStudy the "What Every Drive Must Know" book until you understand the rules of the road. Pay attention to speeds you should drive in areas without posted speed limits, what all the road signs mean, and right-of-way rules.

Step 3
Show original IdentificationReturn to the driver's license bureau with original documents to prove your identification and ask to take the test to obtain a permit for a driver's license. (Note: This applies if you are over 18. If you are under 18, you must show proof of passing an approved driver's training program.)

Step 4
Practice driving until you feel competentPractice driving on your permit for a minimum of 30 days if you are over 18. If you are under 18, you cannot apply for an actual driver's license until you are 16, or receive special approval.

Step 5
Schedule and take your road testSchedule your road test and take it. If using your own vehicle, you must confirm that all lights work, fluids are full, and that you have registration and proof of insurance.

Step 6
Obtain your licenseTake your driver's permit and proof of passing your road test to the driver's license bureau along with your original ID. Pay your fees and obtain your drivers license.
