Getting a driver's license is one of the first things on your mind if you are a teenager or an adult needing transportation to and from work. The process can seem intimidating, especially when you do not know what to expect. While the exact rules, regulations, and procedures may vary slightly from state to state, the basic requirements for obtaining a drivers license are similar. How do you obtain a drivers license?

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Certified Birth Certificate or US Passport
  • Marriage license if applicable
  • Proof of address such as utility bill
  • Study for Written test
  • Road Test
  • Proof of Driver's Training if under 18
  1. Step 1
    Go to the DMV
     
    Go to the DMV

    Go to your local DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles, Secretary of State Office, or whatever your local driver's license bureau is named and ask for a list of the identification required to obtain a driver's license as well as a copy of "What Every Driver Must Know."

  2. Step 2
    Study the Rules of the Road
     
    Study the Rules of the Road

    Study the "What Every Drive Must Know" book until you understand the rules of the road. Pay attention to speeds you should drive in areas without posted speed limits, what all the road signs mean, and right-of-way rules.

  3. Step 3
    Show original Identification
     
    Show original Identification

    Return to the driver's license bureau with original documents to prove your identification and ask to take the test to obtain a permit for a driver's license. (Note: This applies if you are over 18. If you are under 18, you must show proof of passing an approved driver's training program.)

  4. Step 4
    Practice driving until you feel competent
     
    Practice driving until you feel competent

    Practice driving on your permit for a minimum of 30 days if you are over 18. If you are under 18, you cannot apply for an actual driver's license until you are 16, or receive special approval.

  5. Step 5
    Schedule and take your road test
     
    Schedule and take your road test

    Schedule your road test and take it. If using your own vehicle, you must confirm that all lights work, fluids are full, and that you have registration and proof of insurance.

  6. Step 6
    Obtain your license
     
    Obtain your license

    Take your driver's permit and proof of passing your road test to the driver's license bureau along with your original ID. Pay your fees and obtain your drivers license.

Tips & Warnings
  • Set up cones in a nearby parking lot to practice parallel parking and backing into a parking space before scheduling your road test.
  • Teenagers may need 2 separate segments of driver's training before taking a road tests.
  • Teenagers must have documented driving hours on the road before taking segment 2 of driver's training.
  • Watch your speed, speeding can mean an automatic failure
  • Pay tickets on time or risk having your drivers license suspended.
