Step 1
Cover letters are a bit more personal than a resume. They are written directly to a particular person and in regards to a specific position. It is ok to write up a draft cover letter that with a few changes can be used for more than one job application.
-
Step 2
At the top left hand corner include your name, address, phone number and date.
-
Step 3
Add a few spaces underneath and include the persons name responsible for hiring or recruiting new employees. Then include their title. Next the company name and address.
-
Step 4
Add a few more spaces and address the letter to the person in step 3. Like Dear Recipients Name. Add another space.
-
Step 5
Start your letter with letting them no how you have come about to find the available position. If it is in response to an ad in the paper or someone with in the company asked you to submit a resume.
Example: In response to an ad in the press' s name, I am submitting a cover letter and resume for the librarian position available. -
Step 6
Next in a new paragraph, state in your letter your objective of gaining employment with their company. This is much like you would in your resume except you will get a little more elaborate. You can explain reasons for choosing new employment if those reasons are flattering to you.
Example: My interest in company's name is to demonstrate my abilities as a sales associated as I find marketing to be challenging as well as rewarding. -
Step 7
Begin the next paragraph describing your skills that you have accumulated through school or previous employments. Again this is much like your resume except now you can be a little more elaborate and use paragraph form. Use action words and avoid using the same words more then once. Use your thesaurus to come up with a variety of words to use.
-
Step 8
The last paragraph refer to your resume. Point out things you would want them to notice as the read over it. Let them know you have also included one with your cover letter.
Example: As you can see from my resume, I have a strong background in filing and customer relations. -
Step 9
Finish with a sincerely, leave a space to sign your name, print your name, and type enclosure.
