New users may feel at a loss for how to find people to follow on Twitter. Fortunately there are tools, articles and Twitter traditions that make it easier. When you first create an account, you'll be given a list of suggested tweeters to follow, so you can follow a few of them and get the hang of how tweeting works. But if you don't know many people on Twitter and want to make new contacts quickly, there are some very easy ways to find people to follow on Twitter.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do a "Find People" search and look for people you know in real life or interesting people who are famous on the web or elsewhere. If you can't find who you're looking for, you can enter the name of their blog or website and see if that shows up. You can also type in the names of your favorite businesses and restaurants to see if they have an account.

  2. Step 2

Browse or search the JustTweetIt.com directory to find others with shared interests. People add themselves to the directory and create a short bio. Add yourself to the directory so people can find you, too.

  3. Step 3

Try Twellow, a Yellow Pages-like directory. You can search by person or by category. You can narrow the search by Twellowhood, or geographical area. You can create a profile here for yourself as well.

  4. Step 4

Go to search.twitter.com and do a keyword search based on your interests. You'll get back a list of the most recent tweets on that subject. If any of the tweets interest you, look at the tweeter's profile and see if they are someone you want to follow.

  5. Step 5

Once you've found some influential people in the niche or niches that interest you, look through the lists of their followers and follow them. Be careful if you use automated refollowing, though. Twitter may see you as a spammer and close your account.

  6. Step 6

Do a search for "RT," and "retweet." When people see a tweet they really like and want to share it with others, they retweet it. A retweet usually starts with “Retweet @user“, or “RT @user”. If you do a search combined with a topic keyword, you are likely to find out who the more popular people related to that topic are.

  7. Step 7

Search for "#followfriday." FollowFriday is a Twitter meme where on Fridays participants suggest several people to follow. You can do a search on search.twitter.com for "#followfriday" and a topic that you're interested in, to see who is recommended by people who discuss that topic.

  8. Step 8

Look through the socialnewswatch.com list of top Twitter users who will follow back almost anyone who follows them. Follow anyone who looks interesting, especially if your goal is to get more followers yourself.

Tips & Warnings
  • Follow Mashable on Twitter for news on new tools as they come out
  • Be careful who you follow. When people start following someone new, they often refollow everyone else who is following that person. But you want to direct quality traffic to your site -- visitors who will spend time at your site and hopefully make you money. Don't collect followers in hopes that it is just a numbers game. It's not. The more non-targeted people you have to manage, the more time you will spend unproductively scrolling through or responding to irrelevant tweets.
