Correct Errors on your Credit Report
Correct Errors on your Credit Report

Mistakes happen, unfortunately mistakes on your credit report can be costly and time-consuming to fix. The good news is, corrections can be made and your credit report can be improved.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look over your credit reports from all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion). Make note of any errors; always check that the name and address are correct on each, especially if your information has changed due to a recent marriage or divorce.

  2. Step 2

If you have found errors, first call the credit bureau to report it. If they cannot remove the incorrect information, ask them for all contact information for the creditor.

  3. Step 3

Now, call the creditor to sort everything out. Make sure you keep detailed notes, including the representative's name and extension. You may need to follow up with a letter, especially when dealing with an error concerning a payoff.

  4. Step 4

If, for whatever reason, the creditor refuses to budge, they are required to allow you to add a 100-word explanation to your credit file.

  5. Step 5

If there is an issue of identity theft, you must act fast. Call 1-877-438-4338 for more information on reporting the crime and correcting your personal information.
