Step 1
You might want to consider switching laundry detergent.Adding 1/2 cup baking soda to water along with detergent before putting in laundry will freshen laundry and remove odors.Borax is also a good laundry booster. Using the hottest water safe for fabric is also important for removing odors.Skipping the fabric softener and using a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle will remove soap residues and lint and will soften and freshen towels.

Step 2
You could decide to only purchase white towels then bleach them every wash.Bleach is well known to kill germs and smells. However bleach is also known to be a tad bit harsh on fibers.

Step 3
If nothing else seems to work, then you need to find out if the culprit lies in your washing machine.Mildew? The waxes in fabric softener hold onto all kinds of greeblies and odors, and any moisture that remains in the washer after use can be a problem. After a load, put your face right down into the washer and give it a good sniff. If you smell even a whiff of mildew, your problem is there and is being redeposited on your clothes with every wash. For a top loader, dump a gallon of bleach into the empty machine and then put it on a hot cycle. Allow the machine to fill to the top and then stop it. Make sure you are wearing old clothes for this next step: while the machine is stopped, use rags dipped in the bleach water to wash all the interior surfaces that you can reach, especially around the top of the basket. Also, if the machine has dispensers for softener and detergent, clean those as well. I used an old toothbrush with the bleach water. When done, throw your rags right in the washer with the bleach solution and let it finish its cycle. If you have a strong lingering bleach odor, run another hot wash cycle through.

Step 4
For a front loader, pour a cup of bleach in the detergent dispenser and run a hot cycle with the machine empty. When done, use a rag dipped in a bleach-water solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water) to clean the gasket and door seal. (Remember to wear old clothes unless you like bleach spotting.) Afterward, wipe all interior surfaces dry with paper towels or a dry rag.
