Give a Back Massage With Essential Oils

Massage therapists employ more than their massage techniques in their craft – aromatherapy essential oils are commonly used to enhance the therapeutic experience they deliver. Read on to learn more about hoe to give a therapeutic massage with essential oils.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Essential oils (See Resources below)
  1. Step 1

Have the person you are giving a massage lie face down on a comfortable surface. Pour your essential oil into a bowl and place it where it will be within your reach as you give a massage.

  2. Step 2

Pour some of the essential oil into your hands and rub them together.
Begin your massage at the small of the back, and continue upward to the shoulders. Keeping your hands flat against the recipient’s back, use long, even strokes to work the essential oil into the underlying muscle. Continue with this technique for a few minutes.

  3. Step 3

Move on to massage specific areas like the recipient’s shoulders, kidney area, etc. Now knead the area as you would if you were kneading dough. Alternate this technique with massaging the area with your knuckles, moving them in a deep, circular motion.
Keep a gentle but firm massage over the spine, in the kidney area and the ribcage.

  4. Step 4

Go back to doing the long massage strokes along the length of the back for a few minutes. Move on to massage another specific area.

  5. Step 5

Repeat these steps, alternating massaging strokes with knuckle kneading until you have massaged the whole back, including the side areas.
