Stripping the head of a screw can be really frustrating when you are assembling a project or making a repair on something. However, it is not the end of the world. Stripped screws can be removed with a little effort and the right tool.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Reversible Drill
  • Drill bit
  • Screw Extractor Bit
  1. Step 1

Drill a hole in the center of the head of the stripped screw to match the size of the extractor bit. Note: the hole should only be in the head of the screw and not all the way through to the end of the tip of the screw.

  2. Step 2

Place the drill in reverse mode and secure the extractor bit in the drill.

  3. Step 3

Place the extractor bit into the drilled hole on the screw head and while applying pressure to the drill, slowly start the drill in reverse. The extractor bit will grab the head of the screw and back the screw out.

  4. Step 4

Grab a new replacement screw and your back in business.

Tips & Warnings
  • Extractor bits come in several sizes and a small kit from Sears or one of the home centers are relatively inexpensive and are a good addition to anyone’s tool box.
  • Whenever using power tools safety glasses should be worn.
