Things You'll Need:
- Your Shoe
- Your Child's shoe
- 30 minutes
- Patience
- Hugs
-
Step 1
Your child may ask for you to teach them how to tie their shoe or it may be time for them to learn. Usually around the time they begin school at 5 or 6. This will allow for them to have independence when they go to school. Take 30 minutes out of your schedule when you are not rushed to show them.
-
Step 2
Have them sit in your lap and show them how you tie your shoe very slowly. This may be difficult at first because you may forget the small steps you take. Repeat the slow tying approximately 3 times. They will ask many questions while you are trying to show them. Encourage them to concentrate on your hand movements.
-
Step 3
Next it is time for them to try it. Have them tie your shoe first moving slowly so they can get the loops right and push it through the hole. They may feel frustrated because their small hands seem to not get poked through the hole. Not to worry. Loosen the shoe string to have additional string available.
-
Step 4
Now have them tie their shoe with it on. Usually when they have it on the shoe will not move. Sit behind them and guide their hands when needed. Say encouraging words such as good job, bigger loop, push right there, and I'm proud of you. This will allow them to not feel frustrated if the tie looks ackward.
-
Step 5
The first couple of times the loops will be really big and loose. That is okay, as long as they get the idea you are on the track. If you are tired and it is not working... try again tomorrow. Remember, there is importance in encouraging your child to at least try. If you practice every day they will get it and continually improve.
