Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Word processing program
  • Printer
  • Nice paper
  1. Step 1

Try to take the time to write your letter of resignation at home if you can.

If you must write your letter at work, then as least prepare a rough draft beforehand so that you're not spending much time on it at work -- and be sure to delete your draft after you've printed it out.

  2. Step 2

Start the letter by dating it with the date with which you plan to hand your letter to your boss.

  3. Step 3

Address the letter to your current supervisor or whomever you report to.

  4. Step 4

To make the intent of the letter clear, in your first sentence write "This letter is to inform XYZ Company that my last day of work will be March XX, 200X" or some similar verbiage.

Make sure that you give your company at least two weeks of a notice that you will be leaving. This is a good amount of time for them to start their search for your replacement.

  5. Step 5

Then you can spend a paragraph or two summarizing what you have appreciated in your employer. Consider wording such as "I am grateful that XYZ company had offered me the chance to ..." and fill in the rest with what type of opportunities were made available to you.

  6. Step 6

If you are very close to your supervisor, then consider adding some information on what characteristics of their leadership you admired.

Sometimes when you resign from a good position your supervisor or boss may take it personal and wonder if they did anything wrong. So it would be nice to say some kind words about what you've appreciated in them as a boss.

  7. Step 7

In the concluding paragraph, you can wish the company and your supervisor future successes.

  8. Step 8

You can end the letter formally by using "Sincerely" or "Best wishes" and then leave some space for your signature and type out your name - this is for administrative purposes.

  9. Step 9

Print out your nice letter of resignation and sign it.
