How to Make an Electric Free Lava Lamp

Remember lava lamps? You could be mesmerized for hours watching the globs bounce this way and that, joining and separating and so forth. In this article I'll walk you through the process of making an electric-free lava lamp. This is great way to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon with your kids. And with no hot light bulbs required, it's completely safe!

Things You'll Need

  • Vegetable oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Alka-Seltzer or Airbourne tablet
  • Flashlight

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the clear plastic soda bottle about three-fourths of the way with vegetable oil. Then, add water until the bottle is nearly filled.

    • 2

Place between 10 and 15 drops of food coloring into the water/oil mixture. Add more than one color for a "far out" experience.

    • 3

Cut the Alka-Seltzer or Airbourne tablet into roughly six to eight pieces. Then, begin dropping the pieces into the bottle and quickly screw the cap on.

    • 4

Turn the lights off and turn on the flashlight. Shine the beam of light through the bottle for an incredible show of multicolored globs. Put some Pink Floyd on the stereo and chill!
