How to Get Constipation Relief

As some point in time, all of us will need constipation relief. There are several ways that you can relieve constipation, and it is easier to start with natural ways before you turn to medications. If you suffer from chronic constipation, it might be a good idea to discuss it with your doctor. In the mean time, try some of these constipation remedies first for constipation relief.

The first thing you can do for constipation relief is to try to increase the amount of fiber in your diet. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. If you like to eat apples, don't remove the peel. Usually the skin of the fruit or vegetable contains the most fiber. The same goes for potatoes and sweet potatoes, so you should eat their skins. Check the packages of grain products to make sure that they say "whole grain." This will ensure that you are getting the good fiber for constipation relief. Prune juice is another good source of fiber and is probably the best known food remedy for constipation.

Make sure that you are getting enough liquids. Drink your six to eight glasses of water a day. You can drink a warm glass of water with lemon juice or some coffee. Some swear by these for constipation relief.

If the previous steps do not work, take a psyllium supplement for constipation relief. Psyllium is a natural bulk forming laxative that you can find in most grocery stores. You can find it under brand names such as Metamucil, but the generic will work just as well.

There are other constipation relief efforts that you can take if all else fails. Try something that contains milk of magnesia or ask your doctor for a prescription stool softener. Some constipation relief products once only available as a prescription are now available over the counter such as Miralax, but, again, try these as a last resort if you can.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are taking fiber supplements, drink plenty of water. If you do not, you will only make your constipation worse.
