How to Get Internet on a Refurbished Laptop

If a laptop has been refurbished, that means that it's been returned to the manufacturer, looked over and given a seal of approval, and then put back out on the market to be sold again. The laptop might've been returned simply because the buyer decided they didn't want it after all. Sometimes, however, they are returned due to a problem with the machine. This is one of the reasons why refurbished laptops are cheaper. There could be problems with it that may have not been fully fixed when it was back at the factory, including Internet problems. So, getting Internet on a refurbished laptop depends on what problems it has.

Instructions

    • 1

Check for any note sent with your laptop outlining any Internet problems it may have had before it was refurbished.

    • 2

Call an Internet providing company like Comcast or Verizon to setup Internet access in your home. If you aren't at home, you will need to connect to a wireless network, or use an Ethernet cable to connect to a house that does have Internet.

    • 3

Use an Ethernet cable to connect to your cable modem, if you have one. If your refurbished laptop has a wireless card, then you'll want to plug in and set up your wireless modem. It should say on the box what kind of Internet the refurbished laptop is capable of using.

    • 4

Click the "Start" button and choose "Control Panel" from the menu. Next, click on "Network Connections." It should say either "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection," or both, depending on what your refurbished laptop can do. It will say here whether you are connected to the Internet, and the status of your connection.

    • 5

Double-click the "Wireless Network Connection" if you have a wireless card. This will bring up a new window, and will allow you to choose a network nearby that you can connect to in order to get Internet. Hit the "Connect" button to connect to this network. If you still cannot connect, you may want to contact the manufacturer to see whether your refurbished laptop was refurbished with an Internet problem, and to ask them about using the warranty to fix it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you install any software on the CD ROM disc if you are hooking up your refurbished laptop to a cable modem.
