How to Earn a Vet Tech License
-
1
Most vet techs earn either an associate's or a bachelor's degree in veterinary technician studies. Vet tech students can earn their degree either at a college or online. Both types of programs combine academic courses with practical training at a veterinarian's office.
-
2
Vet techs often have to take prerequisite courses before entering their full-scale vet tech program. These "prereqs" include courses in chemistry, biology, mathematics and English composition.
-
-
3
After completing their prereqs, students begin their vet tech studies. These studies include courses in animal anatomy, pharmacology, pathology and nursing.
-
4
An important part of an accredited vet tech training program is clinical studies, or doing hands-on work at a veterinary clinic or hospital. During clinicals, vet techs work with either large, feral animals or small, domestic animals, depending on their veterinary specialization.
-
5
After graduating from their training program, vet techs take the Veterinary Technician National Examination . Passing this license enables vet techs to gain full-time or part-time employment.
