How to Fix Problems Installing Yahoo Messenger on Windows Vista

Yahoo! Messenger is a popular instant messaging client, allowing users to chat with friends around the world from the comfort of their own home. Unfortunately, from time to time problems can occur when attempting to install Yahoo! Messenger. Some of the problems that you might run into when installing Yahoo! Messenger can be specific to the Windows Vista operating system, but luckily these problems tend to be quite easy to fix. If you have been unsuccessful in installing Yahoo! Messenger on Windows Vista, make sure you try the following before giving up.

1. Make sure that you have Administrator Privileges. The most common cause of problems when trying to install Yahoo! Messenger on Windows Vista comes from not having Administrator Privileges on the account you are attempting to install from. Without these privileges the account isn't authorized to install new software, which inputs itself into the Windows Registry. Simply sign into a different account with Administrator Privileges in order to correct this problem.

2. Check your account's User Account Control settings. User Account Control is a safety feature included in Windows Vista to prevent programs from installing themselves without the user's knowledge or consent. You will be asked whether you wish to install the software if User Account Control is on; selecting "OK" will generally allow the software to install without problems. Some software can have trouble installing if User Account Control is on, so if problems persist, turn it off by going to the Control Panel, clicking "User Accounts and Family Safety," clicking "User Accounts," selecting your account, and clicking "Turn User Account Control On or Off." You will need to reboot your computer for the change to take effect.

3. Ensure that you have the latest Yahoo! Messenger installer. Some problems with installation can be caused by a corrupt installation file or an older installer that isn't compatible with Windows Vista. Visit the Yahoo! Messenger home page and download the latest version of the Yahoo! Messenger installer, then try to install the program again.

4. Defragment your hard drive. Installation problems (as well as other computer problems) can occasionally be caused by severe fragmentation of your computer's hard drive. To defragment your hard drive, open the Control Panel, click on the "System and Maintenance" option, then click "Defragment Your Hard Drive" under the "Administrative Tools" heading. Please note that this process can take several hours depending on the size of your hard drive, and that your computer will be unusable during this time.

5. Scan for viruses and AdWare. Though most virus and AdWare programs won't cause problems specifically with the installation of Yahoo!
