Flower Fairies Make Great Easter Decorations
Flower Fairies Make Great Easter Decorations

Decorating for kids at Easter is part of the joy of Easter! Here are several ideas for making crafts, gifts and a beautiful centerpiece that the children of all ages will enjoy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tree branch
  • Felt
  • Embroidery Floss and Needles
  • Wood beads
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Small Fabric or Silk Flowers
  • Wool Roving in Easter Colors or Hair color for Fairies and Gnomes
  • Acorns
  • Clay that dries hard
  1. Step 1

Find a tree branch that looks like a small tree - in other words, has many smaller branches on it. You'll use the smaller branches to hang up your Easter crafts you'll make in the other steps. Put a lump of clay that hardens on a piece of wax paper, and stick the branch into the center of it. Make sure it's big enough to keep the branch from tipping. Let harden according to clay directions.

  2. Step 2

Make some easter eggs to hang on your tree! Here's one method: cut two identical egg shapes out of the felt, put a bit of wool roving or other stuffing in between the two pieces, and blanket stitch the felt together around the edges in a contrasting color of embroidery floss. You can also do some other embroidery stitches across the egg to make it look more decorated. Tie a loop of embroidery floss to the to of the egg, and hang on the tree.

  3. Step 3

Another method to make a more 3 dimensional egg is to felt wool roving into the shape of an egg. Take some of the wool roving (which is wool that is combed but not spun into yarn, you can often buy it at yarn stores) and wrap pieces of it into a ball. Alternate directions of the roving as you add layers to get to the size and shape of the egg you want. It will shrink when you felt it. Dip it in hot soapy water (dish soap is fine), and start squeezing and rubbing and massaging the roving. Wool felt is made by agitating the fibers until they cling to each other. Keep dipping into the water and rubbing until the egg is thick and tight. You can also decorate this with embroidery, or felt on additional colors of wool with thin strips of the roving.

  4. Step 4

Flower fairies and Gnomes are decorations that you can use for easter and for the rest of springtime! Shape pipe cleaner into the shape of a body - start with one end at the head, make one arm by going out and bending back into the body, make a leg the same way, and repeat on the other side. You will end up with the two ends together at the top - cut off any excess. Put on a wooden bead head, and draw on a simple face with colored pencils if you wish. Make a shirt or dress out of felt - stitch together with embroidery floss. Take apart a silk flower and use the petals as a skirt. Or, for a Gnome, make some felt pants. Glue a bit of wool roving onto the top of the bead for hair, and glue on an acorn cap if you like. Bend the hands an feet to shape them, or you can add a smaller wooden beads for both hands and feet. You can also use the flower petals as wings, just glue them onto the back of your fairy. Put your fairy in the tree - they love to live in trees!
