How to Break in a Baseball Glove

Spring is here along with baseball season. Thousands of kids will be trying to break in the new baseball glove. Here are a few tips to help you break that baseball mitt in properly.

1. 

   There are lots of methods that have been used to break in baseball gloves. The best method is to wear the glove and play constantly. Play catch and trow the ball into the baseball mitt as hard as you can repeatedly. Get out and play ball and work the glove around.

2. 

   To help break a baseball glove in quickly you will need an oil or lubricant to soften the leather. Most baseball glove manufactures also make oils formulated to break in your glove. People also use foam shaving cream, saddle soap, mink oil, petroleum jelly or commercial foams made to be used in an oven. I will write an article on that method and link to it below.

3. 

   When applying oil or other lubricants to your glove is do not over do the amount. Let oils soak in and rub them in, but don't leave them wet. The wet leather will deteriorate faster. Also remember to lightly oil the stitching to keep it from getting dry. Again oiled but not soaked.

4. When your glove is oiled you can place a baseball or softball in the pocket where you will normally catch the ball and rubberband or tie the baseball glove closed around the ball. Many kids even put the glove and baseball underneath their mattress while they sleep to form a good pocket.
