What better way to recycle a used or torn pair of jeans, than to make a new article of clothing. Here are directions on making a denim skirt from your old jeans.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Using scissors, cut the legs of your jeans about .5 inches longer than you want your skirt.

  2. Step 2

    Turn the jeans inside out.

  3. Step 3

Cut at seam out on the inner part of the leg. Also cut the seams on both sides of the pant leg you cut off.

  4. Step 4

Lay the jeans flat, so that the back is facing you. Cut a 2 inch straight slit at the top of the V shaped slit and fold under the edges and pin them.

  5. Step 5

Place one of the pant legs under the back of the skirt, so that it is completely covering the V shaped slit. Pin the leg into place.

  6. Step 6

Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the front of the skirt and another leg.

  7. Step 7

    Turn the skirt inside out.

  8. Step 8

Topstitch the panels into place. Backstitch at the top.

  9. Step 9

Cut the overlapping fabric from the leg to about 1/4 inch from the seam.

  10. Step 10

Cut the extra leg fabric at the bottom, so that it is even with the bottom of the skirt.

  11. Step 11

Fold about 1/2 inch of the skirt up at the bottom and pin it. Turn the skirt inside out and hem the bottom of the skirt.

Tips & Warnings
  • you can add side panels to the skirt with the same procedure. You simply have to cut the jeans at the side seam sew the top few inches together before adding the leg piece as the V shaped panel
  • if you want the bottom of the skirt frayed, you don't have to hem it. You simply want to bar stitch the bottom of the seems so they don't unravel.
  • you can mix and match denim if you want
  • Make sure you have enough leg fabric to cover the panels when you choose your skirt length.
