Write a Children's Book With a Friend

Children’s books are often written in partnership. Many times there is both a writer and an illustrator. Here’s how to write such a children’s book.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pen and paper
  1. Step 1

Are you the writer or illustrator?

The answer is obvious. You know what you’re good at.

  2. Step 2

    Find a good partner.

This is vital. Only work with someone you like. You are going to spend some time with this person developing the book. Better be able to work together.

  3. Step 3

    Keep a childlike spirit.

When you are developing the book keep the perspective of the child foremost in your mind. As you and your partner collaborate never forget that your job is to kindle the mental flame within each child who touches your book.

  4. Step 4

    Choose a good topic.

Don’t write about something that has been written about unless you truly have a new take on it. Try to do something interesting that is not run-of-the-mill. Remember, even though this is a children’s book, it’s still a piece of art. Jimmy Goes to the Zoo is tired. Jimmy Goes to the Peruvian Rainforest might be more interesting.

  5. Step 5

    Create good characters.

As you and your partner collaborate, develop the main characters in unison. If you are the writer, talk to your partner about what you imagine the characters to look like. Conversely if you are the illustrator guide the writer toward your vision of the character.

  6. Step 6

Start about looking for an agent

When your book is done, find yourself an agent. This is no easy task, and is almost as difficult as getting published sometimes. If you find a good agent however it may be the difference between selling ten copies of your book to your child’s elementary school, and becoming a world-wide sensation. There’s a lot in between of course.

  7. Step 7

    Assess the experience

Assess whether you would like to work with your partner again. If you have a successful book realize that you guys are probably most sellable as a packaged product. Hopefully you followed step 2.
