You can use old ties that are no longer being worn as belts, headbands, handles on bags, draft stoppers, draw strings, doll clothes, sew them together side by side to make vests, skirts, pillow covers, etc. The very colorful ones make great peacock tail designs for pillow tops and quilt projects.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Lots of unused men's ties
  • scissors
  • needle and thread or sewing machine
  1. Step 1

If using for belt just loop it through and tie it. If necessary sew the narrow ends of two together to make it long enough. If you are going to use them for draw strings on bags thread them through with a large safety pin.

  2. Step 2

If you are going to want to make a vest or skirt then sew them together side by side. Same way for pillow covering. Alternate wide ends with narros ends to get rectangle shapes. You can use them like that to cover a small window for a room darkening curtain.

  3. Step 3

You can also make a pair of straight leg jeans or pants into bell bottoms or flare leg by opening the outside seams of the pants and sewing in the ties (use one to four sewn side by side depending on how wide you want the legs).

Tips & Warnings
  • Try using different shades of the same color for an appealing effect... or combine different colors all together for an eye-catching display.
  • If you cut off the widest end of the ties in different colors you can form a peacocks tail or complete star tipped circle for pillow covers or quilt tops.
  • Try not to mix silk ties with polyester ones as silk ones do not do well in a washing machine or dryer.
