How to Find Free or Cheap Diapers

Most families spend over $2,000 a year buying disposable diapers. This cost would be cut dramatically if you could find free or even cheap diapers. Your baby doesn't have to have premium diapers to do the duty in. Why not start being thrifty and find deals to help your budget survive? Here are some ideas.

1. Join a Moms club or group. You can find a group of new mothers in your area by joining meetup.com (see Resources below). This is a national site where members organize events and meetings based on a particular topic or hobby. A group with other new moms may be just the place to find free diapers. Babies outgrow diapers fairly quickly, and some moms may have extra packs of diapers to give away that have been outgrown. Other mothers go through several types of diapers before finding ones that don't give their babies a diaper rash. You can certainly take the diapers they can't use and try them with your baby.

2. Check online at freecycle.org (see Resources). Freecycle groups are generally in every city, and everything that is posted on the board is free on a first come, first serve basis. It is easy to find diapers here. And if you can't find free diapers, the moms on the board could probably give you more ideas about where to look.

3. Check online at craigslist.org (see Resources). Craigslist is organized by state and city. There are lots of different categories, so look under "free stuff" or "baby items" first. This is another great resource to find free diapers.

4. If you are a member of a church or other house of worship, check with them. Houses of worship often have mom groups that give away baby items.

5. Check with the crisis pregnancy centers in your area. Since they are nonprofits, companies such as Huggies and Luvs often donate several packets of diapers yearly. If they do not have any diapers to give away, they will probably have tons of resources to offer you that may.

6. Check out local thrift stores. They probably will not have free diapers, but they may have diapers that are really cheap. Thrift stores often have lots of good deals, and they are great places to find many baby items.

7. Consider cloth diapering. It is a bit messier than disposable diapers, and you will have to do the laundry more often, but it can save you money over a long period. Cloth diapers are reusable and will also help the environment. There are many different styles of cloth diapers, so be sure to get opinions from moms who are using them, and also find which one works best with your lifestyle.
