Making decorative seashell candles is a great craft project. Use found or bought seashells as molds for homemade candles that you can also give as gifts to relatives and friends. Since candles are no longer necessary to provide light during the evenings, decorative candles that are scented and dyed are now used to create a beautiful ambience in the home. Scented candles are often used as aromatherapy, while dyed candles provide color and whimsy to any room.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fragrance oil
  • Seashells
  • Wax: paraffin or soy
  • Decorative embeds of your choice
  • Cotton wick
  • Candle melter
  • Candle thermometer
  • Dyes
  • Putty
  1. Step 1

First, choose what type of candle wax you'd like to use. Paraffin is the most common type of wax used to make a candle. Soy wax is all natural and easy to clean up. Purchase all your supplies from online wholesalers. Make sure the fragrance oils you purchase are safe to use in candle-making.

  2. Step 2

Melt the paraffin or soy wax in a large pot half-filled with water over low-to-medium heat. Place the candle melter in the water and gradually add the wax. Add as much wax as you'd like depending on the size or number of candles you plan to make. Add a few drops of the fragrance oil to the melted wax. Half a teaspoon of fragrance oil will give a strong scent to one candle. You should also add dyes at this point to give the wax any color you desire. Mix until the dye and fragrance have blended in well with the wax. Start by adding a little bit of dye, then add more if you want the color to be darker.

  3. Step 3

Center the wick. Make sure the wick is about 2 inches longer than the candle you're making. Secure the wick with putty at the bottom of the seashell. Tie the top of the wick to a pen or pencil to keep it in the center of the shell.

  4. Step 4

Carefully pour the melted wax into the seashell. Heat the wax to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This is when the candle thermometer will come in handy to let you know exactly how hot the wax is. Once the desired temperature for the wax has been reached, that's when you must pour it into the shell.

  5. Step 5

Refrigerate the seashell for a few hours to allow the wax to cool. Large seashells work particularly well, but smaller seashells will also do. Distribute your seashell candles throughout your home and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Employ the help of another person when melting and pouring the wax to prevent any accidents or burn injuries.
  • Wear oven mits when handling the hot, molten wax.
  • Cover the entire candle-making area with newspapers for easier cleanup.
