Irish Soda bread is a tradition for St. Patricks Day in my family. It's easy to make and is so good we make it throughout the year and not only for celebrating St. Patricks Day.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 9 INCH round size pan
  • 2 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 unsalted butter
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees

  2. Step 2

Butter a 9" round pan (or spray with non-stick cooking spray)

  3. Step 3

In a large mixing bowl sift together 2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour, 1/2 cup of granulated sugar, 1 1/2 tsp of baking powder, 1/4 tsp of salt, 1/2 tsp of baking soda and set aside

  4. Step 4

Take 1 cup of butter (equal to one stick) and cut into the flour mixture until it resembles small peas. Then add the 1 cup of raisins.

  5. Step 5

Next in small bowl beat the 1 large egg, add 1 1/4 cup of buttermilk and 1/4 cup of sour cream until blended.

  6. Step 6

Then add the egg mixture to the dry mixture and stir until just blended.

  7. Step 7

Transfer batter to 9" round pan and bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Tips & Warnings
  • This recipe makes one round loaf so double or triple the ingredients to make more loaves
  • Serve plain or with butter
  • Can be make ahead of time and frozen
