Scout around her quilting supplies stash to get an idea of what she already has in terms of tools. If she doesn't have a rotary cutter for cutting fabric, she'll be thrilled to receive one as a Mother's Day gift. Even if she does have one, buying a new one that's smaller or larger than the one she owns is a nice addition to her sewing tool box.

A "jelly roll" or "layer cake" of fabric makes a sweet Mother's Day treat. This jelly roll is from fabricshack.com.

You can never have too much fabric--just ask any quilter. Quilt shops and online quilt fabric suppliers offer rolls and packs of precut fabrics called "jelly rolls," "layer cakes," or "lollipops." These sweet bundles of quilting fabric already cut into strips or squares will help inspire your mom on Mother's Day.

Your local fabric store probably has a selection of quilt patterns and books. Spend a few minutes looking and one will jump out as most appealing to your quilter mom. Or, give mom a subscription to a quilt magazine this Mother's Day.

A Mother's Day basket with a quilt theme is a welcome gift. For the "basket" start with a sewing or quilting storage container from your local fabric shop. Add quilter's pins, needles, a pincushion, a few spools of thread in pretty colors and a fat quarter or two. (Fat quarters are pre-cut pieces of fabric that measure about 18 by 22 inches.)

Tips & Warnings
  • No matter what you give your mom this Mother's Day, add a note thanking her for all she does for you. And adding chocolate is never a bad idea, either.
