Become a Certified Landscape Designer

To meet the criteria to become a certified landscape designer you'll need to satisfy specific requirements and also have a minimum amount of experience under your belt. Organizations like APLD require you to have planned and installed projects available for reference if you want to become a certified landscape designer, and even though they don't require you to have formal education in the field it always helps for consideration. Here's some additional information on how to become a certified landscape designer.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get your facts straight first before attempting to become a certified landscape designer so you don't accidentally work towards the wrong goals. This is best accomplished by visiting their website at APLD.org or giving them a call and requesting an informational packet.

  2. Step 2

Generally speaking, you'll need to have at least four years of relevant and professional work experience before you apply to become a certified landscape designer. If you don't have the experience yet it's best to just work at getting the experience and learn as much as possible first.

  3. Step 3

Education is another factor in becoming a certified landscape designer, and although it's not a requirement it definitely can't hurt you and will only help with the approval process. Any type of education could help you even if its not a formal degree, it could be as simple as a class or something else that you pursued.

  4. Step 4

You will also need to have a portfolio of three professionally completed projects that you can submit for review in order to become a certified landscape designer. These will be submitted along with your completed application and other materials which are all available on their website.
