Going “green” doesn’t have to be limited to human folk—canines can do their part as well. After all, they share the earth with us. Here are some steps to a more greener, earth-friendly pooch—and planet!

From Quick Guide: Green Product Basics
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with hemp for walks. Dogs take their walks seriously, and so should you. As you may already know, hemp is durable and environmentally friendly—but did you also know that it’s a hypoallergenic, comfortable material for canines that softens with wear? Collars, leashes and harnesses are all available in hemp.

  2. Step 2

Pick up after your dog with biodegradable, recycled plastic bags. There are a variety to choose from both online and at pet supply stores. Go Green by Perf is one that completely breaks down within two years, and the Go Green 21.10 Foundation fosters and promotes green education throughout the world.

  3. Step 3

Make your dog’s sleep experience more pleasant with comfortable hemp blankets, pillows and beds, which are also washable and durable. Or why not invest in a Greener Pup Bed? These are soft, yet sturdy and filled with materials derived from either recycled soda/water bottles or corn (yes, corn) and the cover is made from breathable, non-allergenic fibers. Aside from doing your part for your dog and the earth, you will also be helping homeless dogs. A portion of the proceeds benefits Ace of Hearts, a nonprofit dog rescue dedicated to saving dogs the day they are scheduled to be euthanized.

  4. Step 4

Play with your dog and get good karma. Hemp rope toys and stuffed toys by Earthdog will do the trick (pun intended). Then there are Good Karma rope toys, which come in two sizes and a variety of animal shapes. The unique part is that each Good Karma rope toy comes with a story of how it was “rescued” and part of the proceeds of each sale benefit The Rescue Train organization to help homeless pets.

  5. Step 5

Feed your dog Buddy Biscuits by Cloud Star. These bake-at-home dog treats come with their own bone-shaped cookie cutter for a fun kids’ activity—and if there are none around—have some fun yourself (your dog won’t tell). A portion of the proceeds will support humane education programs and animal shelters.

  6. Step 6

Dress your dog to the nines in a green way. Your dog can “Bark for Green” in an organic cotton tank that stretches and is machine washable or “Shake it off” in a stylin’ eco-friendly, natural T-shirt. These tanks and T-shirts support environmental charities and pet health and welfare organizations respectively.
