Things You'll Need:
- Apple Computer with Garageband
-
Step 1
Apple has introduced a FREE and simple way to create your own custom ringtones for your iPhone using GarageBand (i.e., Mac only). The first thing you'll need to do, is download and install the latest update of GarageBand from Software Update (version 4.1.1 or newer). Once you've installed and restarted your computer, turning any song on your computer into a ringtone is easy. Here's how it works.
-
Step 2
Cycle Region ButtonOpen your iTunes library and select the song you want for your new ringtone, next open GarageBand, and simply drag and drop the song from iTunes into a new track in GarageBand. Make sure you name and save your project. Now, at the bottom of Garageband you will notice a Cycle Region button (see pictured), that will activate the region loop tool. Go ahead and activate it.
-
Step 3
Adjusting the sliderNow adjust the length and section of the song you want to have as your ringtone. The maximum length is 40 seconds. You may select any part of the song by dragging the slider left or right.
-
Step 4
Sending your ringtone to iTunesFinally, when you've got everything set the way you want it, just go to the menu bar and click SHARE -> Send Ringtone to iTunes. GarageBand will automatically convert the song to the proper format and sync it to your iTunes library as a Ringtone. At this point you may rename the ringtone if your so inclined.
-
Step 5
In Garageband, increase the volume to the max. Once your ringtone is in iTunes, simply select it, and click File -> Info -> Options. Drag the slider to the max and click OK. Now your ringtone is loud enough to hear

on 11/9/2009 There are much easier ways, e.g.you go to mobilespin.net and use their free ringtone tool. It generates a .m4r at the end which you can drag/drop in iTunes and sync to iPhone and you're done
