Step 1
First, obviously, is find a place where you would want to work at and get an application from them. If you have a friend that works there, that is even better. Bartenders need to be trusted, so a reference that works at the place already gives you a head start.
-
Step 2
When filling out the application, make sure to put all experience that you have related to bartending on there. Even if you don't have any formal training. Every little thing, including serving drinks at your own private party can be put on the application as bartending at a private event.
-
Step 3
Learn as many drink combinations as you can. There are books and online resources that will help you out with this. You may not have to have gone to school, but I'm sure your boss would like you to know at least basic drink combinations.
-
Step 4
Practice mixing and pouring drinks. You need to be able to pour drinks quickly without making a mess. Being able to do it with style may earn you extra tips, but if your skills are lacking then skip the theatrics.
-
Step 5
If you are able to land an interview, remember to act professionally even though it may be in a bar. This means, don't order an alcoholic beverage before talking to the boss. Also, remember to smile and be polite to everyone.
