Dealing with anxiety and depression is a challenge, one of the biggest challenges you will ever face in life if it is severe. Ive develpoed some coping mechanisms that seem to help

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Quiet place
  • music
  • yourself
  1. Step 1

Anxiety and depression can be crippling, anxiety creates what therapist call repetitive thoughts, meaning the same thought which goes round and round in your head. It is usually a negative thought and depressed or anxious people tend to anticipate worse case senarios. I am one of those people myself after having menengitis and almost losing my life to it a couple years ago. These repetitive thoughts bothered me for a long time so i went to a therapist. Here is what I found that helps.

  2. Step 2

The number one reason is guilt, there are alot of reasons people get depressed but guilt seems to be the underlying reason for the illness, guilt over illness or behaviours, these all create a negative repetitive thought of unworthiness. The triggers to these thoughts are what need to stop. Ive found that music seems to calm me and when I notice the triggers, stop the thought and change it to something else.

  3. Step 3

The only thing we have is here and now, the past is the past, live in the moment as best as you can, create a moment and enjoy the moment for what it is because life is a series of moments, not a destination but a journey, the journey does not have to be in your mind 24/7. I found that keeping my mind occupied with projects or even blogging stops the negative thoughts. Look for the positive in what you do, accept who you are and above all do not beat yourself up for illness, anxiety or for having depression. Join a group online or have friends around you who are positive, they can be your best therapy.

Tips & Warnings
  • I am not a therapist, I only suffer from these issues and have found small ways of coping myself.

on 3/28/2009 This are good tips. Worrying about what is done or what may happen prevents us from living in the now. Redirecting negative thoughts to more calming or positive perspectives is a great way to enjoy the good things you do have and to stay focused in the now!
