Butterscotch is made from butter and brown sugar and gives brownies a light, delicious flavor. This recipe is small and yields only a few, thin brownies. I am single, so if I made a big batch, I would eat all of them. I have never tried doubling this, so if you do, let me know how it goes!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/4 c butter or margarine
  • 1 c lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 c all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • saucepan
  • electric mixer
  • mixing bowl
  • wooden spoon
  1. Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Step 2

To make the butterscotch, melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Then, add the brown sugar, mixing until it is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Temper the egg, then add it and the vanilla to the sugar mixture. Beat with a hand mixer until well mixed.

  3. Step 3

In a mixing bowl, sift the remaining ingredients together. Then, add the butterscotch to the flour mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until well mixed. It will be very sticky.

  4. Step 4

Put the batter into a greased 8x8 inch pan. Spread it out as best as you can.

  5. Step 5

Bake 20 - 25 minutes. It is done when the edges are golden and start to pull away from the edge of the pan. When cool, cut into squares or bars. Enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Nuts or coconut can be added to the batter. Add them after you have mixed the butterscotch into the flour mixture. Or, you may add nuts to the top of the batter.
  • Remember to temper the egg! The sugar mixture is hot and will cook the egg if it is not properly tempered.
