1. Get consulted. Most orthodontists will give you a free consultation. Western Dental (1-800-DENTIST) will perform these services for you. If Western Dental is not available where you live, make an appointment with the nearest dental school. It is essential that you get the orthodontist opinion in writing before you leave the office, especially if the severity of the condition causes pain or otherwise prevents you from leading a normal life.

2. Let the Orthodontist know that you cannot afford treatment, and ask if they know who can help. They should give you a list of charitable organizations.

3. Swallow your pride, and file for government assistance. If you live in a state that does not cover cosmetic dentistry, do not assume you can't get it. In step one, you were advised to get a recommendation in writing. If your teeth are so misaligned that it disrupts your life, the government will have to foot the bill. There are supplemental services established to pay for it. This is especially true for children.

4. If you do not qualify to get braces through state insurance, make sure you go to a dental school for your orthodontic care. It is very cost effective, and they do occasionally offer their services pro bono.

5. Once you have established that you must receive care at the dental school, it's time to find a benefactor. There are several groups that help with such things:

   The Lyons Club
   The Elks
   The Salvation Army
   The Oddfellows
   Your Church
   Any Church

   You can even get all of these groups to sponsor a portion of your orthodontic bills, and cover the whole thing. You must be diligent though. These organizations are bombarded with requests for financial help, especially during this economic crisis. With time, effort and a genuine need, you will get the braces you deserve.

Tips & Warnings

• Do not feel like you are taking advantage by applying for Medicaid. Trust me, the government will take advantage of you if they were in a financial bind.

• Do not feel like a free loader for asking for charity. The Salvation Army exists to offer charity. They enjoy it. I'm sure you can donate your gently used items to them to balance out the Karma.

• It is nearly impossible, and very expensive to attempt to switch orthodontists once your braces are put on. Pick a doctor that you will stick with.
