Things You'll Need:
- Fresh Catnip or
- Dried Catnip
- a Ziploc Bag
- an old cat toy
-
Step 1
Get quality catnip.
If you have access to fresh catnip, use that. If you must use dried, try to get some that hasn't been ground up too badly. As with any herb, the more ground up, the more quickly the scented oils evaporate. Whole leaf organic catnip would be best, but it's hard to find. -
Step 2
How much catnip?
You can use several leaves of fresh catnip per toy, or a tablespoon or so of dried catnip per toy. (Remember that fresh catnip in particular is very strong for cats, and can cause drooling and even stomach upset if your cat eats more than a leaf or so.) -
Step 3
Rub the toy with some of the catnip.
The rubbing will not only get some extra scent on the toy, but it will bruise the leaves and release more of catnip oils. This will help release more catnip scent even with dried catnip. -
Step 4
Put catnip and toys in a ziploc bag.
Seal the catnip toys in the ziplock back with the catnip. Press out as much air as possible before you seal it. Shake the back around to see that the catnip is in contact with as much of the surface of the toys as possible. -
Step 5
Let it sit for a few days.
If you are using fresh catnip, refrigerate the bag of toys and herb. Fresh herbs are moist and can ferment or spoil. If it's dried, you can just put it in a cupboard. Remember that cats will probably be able to smell the catnip through the plastic, so if you don't put it away, they may try to get it out.
