This article will help keep your dog from urinating where he/she isn't supposed to.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dog or puppy
  • Leash
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Bucket
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

The first thing you have to do is make sure you completely clean and deodorize the areas that have already been unrinated on. Using about a tablespoon of vinegar to about 2 quarts of water makes a decent odor reducing formula. There are plenty of products as well to clean and deodorize surfaces.

  2. Step 2

Especially with a puppy, you will need to keep a close eye on their behavior. If it looks like they may mark their spot, take action and take them outside (or to a potty pad if indoor) and keep them there until they go. Do NOT praise them for going in the right spot. If you praise them after they go they will think it is a perfect way to get attention and they will go anywhere if they are feeling lonely.

  3. Step 3

Once your pet has done their duty, take them back to your living area and continue on as normal. If you are unable to attend to your pet at all times, crating is a viable option as long as they are not in for more than a few hours at a time. If you crate your pet, take them to their 'potty' area as soon as you let them out. Keep them there until they go. Then take them back to the common areas.

  4. Step 4

Continue this regiment for several days or weeks until it becomes second nature for your pet. They may form habits such as pacing by the door or bringing you their leash.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not make 'going potty' an exciting thing for your pet. If you praise them right after going, it only seems to them that going pee anywhere will get them attention.
  • Try to eliminate any traces of prior odor.
  • If you use a paper towel to clean up a mess, bury it in your yard where you want them to go. They will smell their own urine and will be more likely to go in that area.
  • Do NOT punish your pet for urinating anywhere. All that will do is scare them into not going until they can no longer hold it. That's where real accidents happen.
  • Animals don't urinate out of revenge. For some pet owners, scolding their pet is one of the few instances that they get attention.
