The first thing you need to do is select the kind wood you want to use. Pine is the easiest to work with, but you can also use cedar or whatever you prefer. You will need 12 three feet long 1x4 boards and 12 two feet long 1x4 boards. These will be the sides and ends of the crate.

Next, you will need four 2x4 boards two feet long. These will be the corner braces of the crate. Lay two of the 2x4's flat on a flat surface. Lay the six of the three feet 1x4's on the 2x4's making sure the ends are flush with the outside edge of the 2x4's. Screw the 1x4's to the 2x4's using 1 1/2 inch wood screws. Repeat these steps to complete the other side of the crate.

To connect the two sides, screw the two feet long 1x4's to the edges of the 2x4's. For the bottom you need six, three feet long 1x4's and four two feet long 1x4's. Lay the three feet long boards on the open part of the crate making sure the edges of the boards are flush with the outside. Next, lay one of the two feet long boards on one end and screw it to each of the boards and to the ends of the 2x4's in the corners. You should use 1 inch screws when screwing the boards together.

Do the same thing on the other end and then add the other two boards to the middle for extra support. Next, measure the inside edges to the crate and cut 2x4's to go inside. Screw the bottom end and side boards to these 2x4's. A lid can be made the same way you made the bottom. You could also hinge the lid instead of attaching it.
