Things You'll Need:
- An XP or Vista computer
- Some folders containing files

Step 1
Start Windows explorer by double-clicking the icon for My Computer or My Documents, or by holding down the Windows key and pressing E.

Browse to the folder containing the subfolders with the files you'd like to count.

To get the number of files from one subfolder, right-click the target folder and select Properties at the bottom of the pop-up menu.

On the General Tab of the Properties Dialog it will say 'Contains:' and give the number of files and subfolders contained in that folder.

To get the total number of files contained in multiple folders, select (highlight) the folders for which you want to get a count.

Right-click the highlighted folders and select Properties in the pop-up menu.

Step 7
The number of files and subfolders contained in those folders will be displayed the top of the Properties dialog. The folders counted will include all the highlighed folders as well as any subfolders they contain. The counted files will include all the files in the folders and in their subfolders, if any.

Step 8
To get the total number of all subfolders and files in the current folder showing in Windows Explorer, right-click on a blank area of the Explorer window (not on any file or folder) and select Properties in the pop-up menu. The Properties Dialog will say 'Contains:' and give the number of files and subfolders contained in the current folder, including the files in the current folder, if any.
