        **Don't File in Most Cases**

        You don't need to file any sort of notification with Social Security if you don't actually receive payments from them. In fact, the Social Security Administration doesn't even keep an address on record for you, unless you are receiving payments.

        **File if You Get Social Security Benefits**

        If you get any form of payments from Social Security, such as retirement or disability, then it is important for them to have a current address on file.

        You can file a change of address online by filling in a few forms and providing current information to confirm your identity. See Resources, directly below, for a link to the Change of Address forms.

        If you prefer, you can call Social Security by phone at 1-800-772-1213 to change your address, or contact your local Social Security Office to being the process.

    Tips & Warnings

    • You can't file a Change of Address with Social Security in advance. Wait until you have actually changed your address.
