Step 1
Buy a cake tier stand. Each tier is a separate cake - they are not attached. This is much easier than trying to fit a multi-layered cake together. Then buy cake pans of the size of each tier. Shop online for the best prices. Google 'wedding cake tier stand' without the quotes.

Step 2
Use fluffy or a rough frosting rather than rolled fondant. Rolled fondant is really expensive. Do a Google search for 'Fluffy Frosting Recipe' without the quotes. An example of a rough textured frosting would be anything that has nuts, candied fruits, citrus peel or coconut in it.
Fluffy frosting or rough textured frosting can hide a multitude of sins on your wedding cake like cracks, uneven surface and chunks that came out stuck to the pan. -
Step 3
Use artificial or real flowers, and real ribbons as decorations. These take no talent, unlike using frosting or marzipan to mold flowers or ribbons. Just keep everything clean and in short pieces so that when you cut the cake the pieces can be dismantled easily without messing up the rest of the cake.
Plan where the bride and groom will cut the first piece of cake and then plan a specific decoration at that spot that will be easy for them to bite around or remove.
Some beautiful ideas are using real miniature tea roses with thin ribbon looped between each flower. Real leaves can also be placed strategically. Make sure you either grow the flowers yourself or the florist assures you that no pesticides have been used. -
Step 4
Visit a Model Train store for miniature items you could use on your wedding cake. Small scale buildings, people, arbors and other items are affordable and unique.

Step 5
Deep blue cake with a white frosting streaked with lavender.Use food coloring and color the wedding cake an intense and interesting shade. Coordinate the color of the cake with your wedding colors. This works best if the frosting and the wedding cake have a lot of contrast.
