Mold grows and thrives in moist and warm environments. The shower as it turns out meets both of these criteria, and as a result provides a comfortable and inviting home for mold. If mold is toxic, some of the commercial mold cleaners available in the market are noxious. Sure, they get rid of mold and mildew pretty fast, but they also leave the person cleaning the shower with watery eyes, a stuffy nose, a tad bit lightheaded, and who knows what else in the long term. Unless mold has turned into a huge problem, preventive and maintenance measures with natural products are an effective way to get rid of it in the shower. Here is how.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Tea-Tree oil

    Tea-Tree oil

Make a tea tree oil spray by combining a cup of water with 20 drops of tea tree essential oil. Spray liberally on all surfaces of the shower where mold tends to grow. Tea tree oil is a powerful fungicide that has a long history of medicinal use in Australia.

  2. Step 2

Put undiluted white vinegar straight out of the bottle into a spray bottle. Spray directly on moldy areas and watch a science experiment in action! The acidity of the vinegar kills mold pretty quickly.

  3. Step 3
    Lemon essential oil

Use essential oils for an aromatic way to kill mold. Combine a few drops of lemon, clove, and tea-tree essential oils with a some castile soap and water to make a mold killing cleaner. The resource section has a link to a recipe.

  4. Step 4

Prevent mold from forming in the first place by reducing humidity and dampness in bathrooms. Run a fan in the bathroom after a shower or open windows to air the room out. Keep shower doors open for a few minutes to air out shower surfaces.

  5. Step 5

Using a squeegee in removing excess water from shower doors and other surfaces in the shower goes a long way in preventing mold from forming in the shower.

  6. Step 6
    Lemon tea-tree shampoo

Use personal care products such as shampoos, conditioners, body washes, and soaps etc that have natural anti-fungal and anti-bacterial ingredients as an additional way to discourage mold in the shower. Ingredients such as tea tree oil, citrus essential oils, rosemary essential oil, and eucalyptus oil have an anti fungal action.

Tips & Warnings
  • Clean shower surfaces regularly.
  • Keep the rest of the bathroom as damp free as possible.
  • Burn essential oils with anti-fungal properties in an aroma lamp in the bathroom to create a spa like atmosphere and prevent mold in the bathroom.
  • Use caution when burning essential oils.
  • Make sure that little children are not around.
