Instead of purchasing starter logs or kindling sticks, recycle your newspaper and collect some things from nature. Even use the sawdust from the logs you cut for firewood!

This is a fun project to do with your children. When we made these kindling packs, we all felt like we were making gift packages to share.

The next time you want to light a fire in your fireplace, grill or campfire, start it with one of these homemade kindling packs-- and they're environmentally friendly!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Newspaper
  • Twigs
  • bark chips, wood chips, or sawdust
  • Leaves
  • Pine needles
  • Vines or twine
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Gather all of your materials--newspaper, twigs, leaves, sawdust, pine needles and bark chips, and sort them in your work area.

  2. Step 2

Next, lay out 2 sheets of newspaper, and start to fill the center with a nice mixture of a little of each of the natural materials. Do not overfill.

  3. Step 3

Fold one corner of the newspaper over to almost meet the other corner. Then, fold the two side corners in, overlapping them over the first folded part.

  4. Step 4

Now grab the bulky part of the newspaper and roll it over until all of the newspaper is rolled up. Hold in place.

  5. Step 5

Take your natural vine or your store-bought twine and wrap it around the bundle to secure. Twist it around at least two times, either parallel to the first wrap or perpendicular, as you would do with a gift-wrapping bow.

  6. Step 6

Tie in a tight and secure knot, and cut the excess vine or twine off. There you have it--your very own, homemade kindling packs, straight from the nature store and recycling bin!

Tips & Warnings
  • Make as many packs as you can and store. These can be used in summer barbecues and cool-weather fireplaces.
  • Save the circulars that come in the mail instead of having to buy newspapers for this project.
  • Let your children help!
  • Store in a covered bin, paper bags, or a garbage bag.
  • Watch the children as they help you collect the items from outside.
  • Make sure they do not touch any poisonous plants.
  • Be careful while handling scissors with small children.
