How to Get Pet Stains Out of Carpet

Every pet is going to have an accident from time to time. If your carpet is the unfortunate recipient of this accident, you might find yourself in a panic. Relax. Don't start ripping up your carpet just yet. Many pets stains can be removed naturally with ingredients you probably already have in your home and by following the tips in this article.

1. The best way to remove any kind of stain from carpet is to begin cleaning it as soon as you are aware of the stain. The less time a stain has to penetrate the carpet, the easier it will be to remove it. Typically, stains that have had time to set in are going to be the most difficult to remove, but it is still possible to remove the stains.

2. The first step in removing pet stains is to clean up any solid material first. Try to lift the solid material up out of the carpet with a paper towel. Remove as much of the solid material as possible. Before applying any type of cleaner, gently blot at the stain with a clean paper towel until no more of the stain will lift out.

   Vinegar is a wonderful product that does wonders cleaning. For tough stains, pour white vinegar directly onto the stain. Allow vinegar to soak in for a minute, and then begin blotting at the stain with a clean, dry towel. Continue blotting until the stain is removed. DO NOT RUB. Rubbing will push the stain deeper into the carpet, making it more difficult to remove. If you have lighter stains, the vinegar can be mixed with equal parts of warm water.

   Another powerful cleaning tool is hydrogen peroxide. It can be used in the same way as vinegar, either by pouring it directly onto the stain, or diluting it with equal parts of warm water. Again, blot until no more of the stain is visible. Note: Hydrogen Peroxide is an alcohol. For darker carpets, you may want to test an inconspicuous area for possible fading or discoloration before applying to a large area.

   Baking soda is also a good pet stain remover. Not only is it effective in removing stains, it is also a good odor neutralizer, so it works well with stains caused by urine or feces. Apply baking soda directly to the soiled area. Coat the entire stain area. Allow to sit for at least a couple of hours, preferably overnight, and then vacuum the baking soda and the stain out of the carpet.

   Salt can also be used to absorb pet stains. After removing solid matter, cover the stain generously with salt. Place a towel over the salt and allow to work for a couple of hours. The salt should absorb the stain out of the carpet. Vacuum the salt and the stain out of the carpet.
